Manual & Electric Breast Pumps Australia | Single, Double, Hospital Grade

Share

Unless you’re exclusively breastfeeding without using the bottle at all, breast pumps are essential for every breastfeeding mum’s journey. The different types of breast pumps available are designed to suit different needs.

Depending on whether you’re doing mixed feeding, exclusively pumping, or only pumping at work, the frequency of your pumping sessions will differ, which in turn will become a factor in your choice of pump.

The Australian Breastfeeding Association has drawn up this quick guide on which type of breast pump you should choose based on your needs.

In this article, I’ve compiled a list of all breast pumps that are readily available in Australia, plus my top picks for each category. To further help you make an informed decision, I’ve included the lowest cost online that I found (including delivery) and customer ratings on ProductReview.com.au.

5 Easy DIY Lactation Cookies Recipes To Increase Milk Supply

Manual Breast Pumps

Manual breast pumps - Avent breast pump, tommee tippee breast pump

Pros:
Affordable, lightweight, portable, and easy to clean with very few parts. Doesn’t require batteries or power. Great for occasional or light pumping, travelling, pumping at work or relieving engorged breasts.

Cons:
Hands can get tired with prolonged use. Suction strength not as strong or efficient as electric ones.

Apre Flow Electric Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

This is one underestimated brand that jumped out of nowhere and took me by complete surprise when I was doing my research. Even though it’s 100% Australian owned, it’s only sold online so it’s not very well known.

I’ve named it my top pick for three simple reasons:

1) Manual breast pumps generally receive relatively low customer rating because they don’t have great suction, so for the Apre Flow Electric Breast Pump to receive a whopping 4.1 stars on ProductReview is a big deal and definitely tops the charts.

2) It is technically a single electric breast pump, but its size and price range place it in the manual breast pump category, which means you’re essentially paying the same low price of a manual pump for an electric one – incredible bargain!

3) It is fully compatible with universal bottles from brands including Avent, Medela, Cherub Baby, Pigeon, Ameda, and more

Unimom Mezzo Manual Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

Like the Apre Flow, the Unimom Mezzo has an impressive 4.1 rating on ProductReview, and its pricing is in the lower range compared to its competitors. Considering both cost and customer satisfaction, this is definitely my top choice for a fully manual breast pump.

If you’re looking for a cheaper yet more reliable breast pump than common ones like the Medela manual breast pump, Tommee Tippee, or Philips Avent, I would highly suggest taking a look at Unimom Mezzo.

Single Electric Breast Pumps

Single electric breast pumps - medela swing, tommee tippee single electric, avent single electric breast pump

Pros:
Stronger suction than manual ones, relatively compact and portable, a great middle-ground option for those who pump at home and also on-the-go. Battery life is usually quite decent on a single charge. Single electric pumps are perfect for mums who are combining breastfeeding and expressing or doing mixed feeding.

Cons:
2-3 times more expensive than manual pumps, and a bit heavier. A lot more parts to clean. The tube, in particular, can be prone to mould growth if not cleaned and dried properly.

Apre 2 in 1 Electric Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

Apre 2 in 1 Electric Breast Pump

Because the Apre 2 in 1 is convertible to a double pump, I’ve listed it as my top choice in both the single and double electric breast pump category. It has some notable features over the Medela Swing that are truly impressive:

  • Hospital-grade suction with 12 suction speeds – Medela Swing only has 9
  • Closed system design – this is most commonly seen in hospital-grade breast pumps and very rarely in single or double pumps
  • Quietest motor when tested against the Medela Swing, Avent Electric, and Tommee Tippee Electric breast pumps

Like its name suggests, the Apre 2 in 1 can easily convert to a double pump with the addition of a double pump conversion kit for just $20 (free delivery). Alternatively, you can get the full double pump twin set for just $125 (R.R.P $250) and free delivery on eBay!

If you compare this to other double pumps in the next category, it’s definitely the cheapest double electric pump breasts you can find on the market.

Double Electric Breast Pumps

Double electric breast pumps - Medela freestyle, medela swing max, unimom allegro

Pros:
Much more efficient than single electric breast pumps, the best option for power pumping to increase milk supply, or for those who are exclusively pumping. Double electric breast pumps are only slightly more expensive than single ones, as many single ones easily convert to a double pump with an additional kit.

Cons:
More pieces to wash and clean, also bulkier than single electric pumps, so these ones are more suited for home use only.

Apre 2 in 1 TWIN Electric Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

There’s no doubt about it, Apre has swept the top spot for all the categories so far. This says something about the consistency of its quality and design.

See my review in the single electric breast pump section above.

Interestingly, it is actually cheaper to get the full double pump twin set ($125) than the single breast pump ($180).

Unimom Premium Allegro Portable Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

The Unimom Premium Allegro is a multi-award winning electric breast pump with a patented closed system design like the Apre 2 in 1, which ensures hygienic expression and collection of breastmilk with no bacteria trespassing through the tubes.

It claims to be one of the lightest and most compact portable breast pump available, weighing at just 270g.

The other interesting feature about this double pump is that it can be converted to a manual pump with an additional switch kit. This gives breastfeeding mums an easy all-in-one solution for all their expressing needs, particularly if they just need a quick and easy to relieve engorgement.

This customer review summarises all its great features very nicely:

Hospital Grade Breast Pumps

hospital grade breast pumps

Pros:
Very powerful suction strength to maximise pumping sessions, also very quiet. Doesn’t cost much more than a double electric breast pump. Designed for multiple users (like maternity wards in hospitals), these ones have a closed system breast pump design that eliminates the problem of mould growth in tubes.

Cons:
Extremely bulky and needs to be plugged into a power outlet. Not even great for home use if you don’t usually pump in one set place. Very few brand options on the market.

Unimom Forte Hospital Grade Breast Pump (Editors Choice)

Another win for Unimom! Granted, it’s really only up against one other competitor, but it’s still the first choice for many as a hospital-grade electric breast pump.

As an official partner of the Australian Breastfeeding Association, Unimom products are highly recommended by hospitals and midwives across Australia. Part of the proceeds from every Unimom sale also goes toward supporting breastfeeding mums through the ABA.

Premium Hospital Grade Breast Pumps

ardo carum, medela symphony - premium hospital grade double breast pumps

Pros:
Similar to standard hospital-grade breast pumps, but these ones are powerhouses.

Cons:
Extremely expensive and even heavier than standard hospital-grade ones, also need to be plugged into a power outlet. Currently only two brands on the market. Much more economical to hire instead of buying outright.

I haven’t picked a winner in this category because there are only two brands on the market and you can’t go wrong with either one. Both are too expensive for most of us to buy, so I will highly recommend consider hiring a breast pump instead.
