Healthy Low-Sugar Wholemeal Muffin Master Mix (With Infographic Recipe)

Babies & Toddlers

Toddlers can be super picky eaters, but they all love snacks. What if the muffins they love is high in fibre, calcium, and other important nutrients, but also contain NO refined sugar?  Today I'm so excited to be sharing this master mix recipe that I've played around countless times for my own toddler. Best thing is, you can be creative with the add-on ingredients to make it veggie, fruit or nut-based.

This recipe is based on the original found on Super Healthy Kids, but I've since experimented a lot with it using blueberries and black sesame powder. The results have been amazing each time.

What you'll love about this master mix muffin recipe:

  • Easy ingredients that you can find at any supermarket
  • Takes less than 20 mins prep time
  • NO refined sugar
  • High in fibre

I've also included a list of optional mix-n-match ingredients that I've personally tested and loved. If you're a visual person, I've also designed an infographic version of the recipe. Download the PDF or high-res PNG below!

Healthy Wholemeal Muffin Master Mix

Dry Ingredients  Wet Ingredients Steps
  • 2 cups wholemeal plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 medium bananas
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  1. Mix dry ingredients well in a large bowl (Do not sift wholemeal flour, the grains will be left behind.)
  2. Blend wet ingredients well in food processor.
  3. Gently fold the puree into the dry ingredients until just combined. Do not over-mix.
  4. Spoon batter into greased muffin tray.
  5. Bake at 175°C ( or 160°C fan forced ) for 20-22 mins or until the muffins are firm to the touch on top, but not quite browning.
  6. Remove from oven and transfer to cooling rack after a few minutes.

Optional mix-n-match ingredients, add according to preference:

    • 120 - 200g baby spinach leaves *
    • 1 - 3 tbs black sesame powder *
    • 1 medium avocado *
    • 1 - 2 cups any berries of your preference **

    * Blend together in Step 2
** Add to batter in Step 3

      TIPS:
      • Transferring the muffins to cooling rack prevents them from continuing to cook from the heat within the tray and end up being overbaked.
      • Once fully cooled, these muffins can be frozen in zip-lock bags for up to 3 months.

      Spinach Blueberry Muffins

This is my favourite version of the recipe and I call it the Super Muffin. It uses 120g baby spinach leaves + 1 cup frozen blueberries + 2 tbsp black sesame powder as add-on ingredients to the master mix.

If you're wondering whether kids will enjoy a veggie-based muffin, I can't tell you how much my 2-year-old adores these. Baby spinach leaves don't have a very strong veggie taste, so these muffins just taste like banana muffins, because that's what they're sweetened with.
